VideoBardo at Quilmes – curation and conference by Marisol Bellusci and Javier Robledo – 24 September
Just received news of this very interesting curation by Marisol Bellusci and Javier Robledo in Quilmes, Argentina on Saturday. I wish I could be there. :))

Note, the image above is from Vic Pereiró’s Complejo Obrero Complejo (Complex Worker Complex) which in quickly edited text and a repetitive beat reminds us of our existential position as numbers (maybe now overly scrutinised numbers, or numbers quickly passing through) in a failed capitalist system.

Poets with a Video Camera – countdown to the Private View
These are the last few days before the opening of Tom Konyves’ milestone exhibition Poets with a Video Camera: 1980–2020. It will be showing from 17th September to 11th December at Surrey Art Gallery, so if you are anywhere near Vancouver it is essential viewing. I am very fortunate to be part of a great bunch of artists, many of whom I have followed over the years.
Jim Andrews with Adeena Karasick, Paul Bogaert, Brandon Downing, Antonello Faretta, John Giorno, Kurt Heintz with Patricia Smith, Annie Frazier Henry, Nobuo Kubota, Fiona Tinwei Lam, Valerie LeBlanc, Janet Lees, Machine Libertine, Azucena Losana, Matt Mullins, Marc Neys,bp nichol, Reverend Pedro Pietri, Arturs Punte, Caroline Reid, Javier Robledo, Peter Rose, Ralf Schmerberg, Hubert Sielecki with Gerhard Ruhm, W. Mark Sutherland, Alejandro Thornton, Sarah Tremlett, and Eku Wand.

Some of the responses: “Truly a milestone event” – Eku Wand; “We need this!!” – Erika Fulop; “Ah, Art Galleries & Videopoetry! “– Martina Pfeiler; “The exhibition/symposium sounds GREAT!” – Bob Holman
Tom has a curator’s statement POETS WITH A VIDEO CAMERA which makes interesting reading and also a look behind the scenes diary extract for the last few days before the opening.
There will also be a Symposium on 5th November introduced by SAG curator Jordan Strom. Entitled ‘New Art Emerging: Two or Three Things One Should Know About Videopoetry’ speakers are: Tom Konyves, Heather Haley, Valerie LeBlanc and Daniel H. Dugas, Fiona Lam, Adeena Karasick, Kurt Heintz, Matt Mullins, Javier Robledo, Annie Frazier Henry, and I am honoured to be key speaker (though feel more than a little overwhelmed with such company). More to Follow!
Pamela Falkenberg and Jack Cochran – a ‘blackbird’ masterclass in making poetry films
As many people in the poetry film world will know, Americans Pamela Falkenberg and Jack Cochran (Outlier Moving Pictures) are the masters of the activist ecopoetry film. Recently, I have been lucky enough to get to know them better, and I am excited to say they will be writing articles for Liberated Words, as and when they feel the muse takes them. In the meantime they are going to contribute a series of three major pieces of writing on their own work, which should provide a really edifying experience for those poetry filmmakers just starting out.

Their major accomplishment – Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird is from the well-known and much loved poem by American modernist poet Wallace Stevens, where a series of short haiku-like stanzas (some more abstract than others) create different images relating to blackbirds. Pam and Jack combine highly detailed compositing, animating and editing with vast treks to source material, so the actual process of making their films is a narrative in itself. To find out more about their painstaking process please read Thirteen Ways of Looking at How to Make a Poetry Film of Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird by Pamela Falkenberg. I am looking forward to the next essay in the coming months!
Atticus Review and The Poetics of Poetry Film
Very pleased to say that Atticus Review has an interview with me – The Archaeology of the Text – on The Poetics of Poetry film by artist Rebecca Rezakhani Hilton. A number of people are mentioned including Pam Falkenberg and Jack Cochran in relation to working from sound first, VideoBardo and of course Tom Konyves. Very pleased to be back on AR again. Thank you too, Rebecca.

John D. Scott (and Elizabeth Bishop) Thomas Zandegiacomo del Bel and myself – ZOOM 28th August, tickets available here

Join us on August 28th at 2pm eastern time for a conversation about poetry film. This year Zebra Poetry Film Festival will celebrate its twentieth anniversary, Liberated Words celebrates its tenth anniversary and a new critically acclaimed feature film Elizabeth Bishop and the Art of Losing (John D. Scott, 2022) is being released. I would like to thank John and Leah for inviting me to take part in this discussion which should prove to be really interesting (in terms of John and Thomas at least!) I have written about John’s tour-de-force of a project before, and the painstaking dedication it took; but revisiting it really highlights the numerous examples of cinematic ‘close observation’, following the approach of his subject. I would challenge anyone to find a more poetic approach to a documentary, as well. Since John is a pioneer in this field I would sign up quickly, before the world moves on and he is back submerged in yet another life’s work!

Attendees will be in conversation with:
John D. Scott, Associate Professor, Documentary Studies, Ithaca College and Director, Elizabeth Bishop and the Art of Losing.
Sarah Tremlett, poetry filmmaker, poet, and theorist, author of The Poetics of Poetry Film
Thomas Zandegiacomo Del Bel, Artistic Director, Zebra Poetry Film Festival
Leah Shafer, Associate Professor and Chair, Media and Society Program, Hobart and William Smith Colleges (moderator)
Co-sponsored by:
the Finger Lakes Environmental Film Festival
and the Center for Media and Society at Hobart and William Smith Colleges
Time:
Aug 28, 2022 02:00 PM in Eastern Time (US and Canada)
