VideoPoéticas latin-no americanas / Latin_no American VideoPoetics; Marisol Bellusci presentation 2020

Invited by Sarah Tremlett, on 12th February 2020 Marisol Bellusci from VideoBardo came to the Bristol Poetry Institute to present her paper and curation: VideoPoéticas latin-no americanas or Latin_no American VideoPoetics. The event was kindly hosted by Dr Rebecca Kosick of the Institute, also founder of the Indisciplinary Poetics Research Cluster, and a Senior Lecturer in Translation, with a particular interest in material poetics, multilingualism, Brazilian art and poetry and translation.

The presentation was fascinating and revealing for all the audience members, particularly younger ones who may have less knowledge about the historical political situation – the military junta – in Argentina in the 1970s and 80s. Marisol spoke about the power of video poetry to reach authentic selves beyond the ‘American’ in Latin; without the external forces that change the identities of those living in countries who happen to bear the name. The presentation was preceded by an introduction by Javier Robledo via Zoom, and here is a bilingual copy of Javier’s presentation and Marisol’s notes

The curation can be seen here.
I have mentioned before how torture and disappearance forced onto a society scared to speak or move, results in long submerged powerful forms of communication, particularly through poetic metaphor, however many years later.
VideoBardo at Liberated Words II festival, 3 October, 2013
After being invited to present a paper and screening at VideoBardo ‘For the Earth’ festival in 2012, Sarah Tremlett wanted to create an opening for Argentinian and Latin American video poetry in the UK. She invited Javier Robledo to contribute a curation for Liberated Words II festival at the Arnolfini, Bristol on October 3rd, National Poetry Day. This was a one-day festival and attached are both the programme for the entire festival as well as the VideoBardo section with Javier’s introduction to video poetry and notes on the artists and their works – Javier presentation about VideoBardo and 2013 screening at Liberated Words. The films mainly in Spanish were very revealing, and we were honoured to screen them as a wonderful contribution to the whole event.

Latin American and Spanish artists shown were:
Oscar Salamanca (Spain) “Doctor Revolución” (2012)
Jorge Daffunchio (Argentina) “OK, John, Paul, lo hice…” (2010)
Ignacio Mendía (Argentina) “Parásito Polilla Corzaón” (2012)
Antonio Alvarado (Spain) “Mujer de materia gris” (2012)
Fundación Hölderlin (Argentina) “Las aventuras de Gatucho” (2012)
Rafael Álvarez Domenech (Cuba) “Aselvizaje” (2011)
Lucas Turturro (Argentina) “Cubicaja o del encierro” (2010)
Javier Robledo (Argentina) “Samsara” (2010)
Alejandro Fontana (Argentina) “Catorce de noviembre” (2012)
Bartolomé Ferrando (Spain) “Sintaxis” (2005)
Films that were screened but are now unavailable for inclusion
Dier (Spain) “Todos esos momentos se perderán” (2011)
Yael Rosenblut (Chile) “Escena pasional del arte” (2007)
Eduardo Romaguera (Spain) “Pez” (2009)
Tarha Erena (Spain) “Sueño Tierra” (2012)
Lola López-Cózar (Spain) “Principios” (2012)

Philip Hartigan & childhood memories in Family History project
I recently posted about Philip Hartigan in the anniversary of the first Liberated Words screening 10 years ago this month. I have now added him to our family history collection, with notes on his process. Here is a link to his moving memoir of his childhood with extraordinarily detailed animation.
The Poetics of Poetry Film a spotlit title by Intellect at the Screen Studies conference, University of Glasgow
Really proud that Intellect selected The Poetics of Poetry Film as one of their spotlit titles at the Screen Studies virtual conference 1st-3rd July. Apparently the first-year sales have gone really well, so thank you to everyone who has contributed or spent their hard-earned money on purchasing a copy. So very special to see it sitting there alongside Frank Burke’s Fellini’s Films and Commercials – and together the group makes fascinating reading: poetry film alongside Slow TV (in Norway) by Roel Puijk (which focuses on real time filming, and began with recording an entire seven-hour train journey between Bergen and Oslo), and Bombay Cinema’s Islamicate Histories, edited by Ira Bhaskar and Richard Allen – quite an honour, thank you.
Sarah Tremlett invited to VideoBardo symposium ‘For the Earth’, Buenos Aires, 2012
The first time I encountered VideoBardo festival was when one of my films Mistaken Identity was shown by them in 2008. This was a conceptual, minimal videopoem – visual text on screen – and they were always a festival that encouraged experimentation. In 2012 I was very honoured to be invited by festival director Javier Robledo to give a talk; and one of my films She / Seasons /Contemplating Nature (2012) was included in the festival (see below).
My paper was entitled ‘The Word as a Leaf’ which I will be adding to the site in due course. It was part of my research into transitional text on screen: the way text can have new poetic or prosodic rhythms in the digital image. I was looking at the remediation of the traditional turning of the line and metronomic patterns as they appear as the prosody of the page poem. I was also looking at how a word can take on almost organic qualities.
The symposium was extraordinary in its scale. There were a number of sites, both from the grand and traditional, to the contemporary art museum to a converted factory, as well as openings and exhibitions to attend. We were continually socialising and experiencing not only all types of poetry as well as a historic city.
I took away a strong sense of the work that Javier Robledo of VideoBardo put in to creating such a festival and I wanted to find a way to collaborate with him and show his curations at Liberated Words in the UK. I have included below the extensive programme details of the festival, as well as the papers given by the invited speakers including myself, and an important address by Javier on the ‘verboaudiovisual’, actually from 2014. Some of these are in Spanish. Please contact VideoBardo for further details about that festival.

MENTORING
People frequently ask about mentoring for poetry films. Sarah Tremlett is currently working on a project and has mentored in the past for both academics and beginner filmmakers and is happy to do so. There is a small charge for this, depending on how much is required and for how long. We can also recommend mentors, either poets or poetry filmmakers depending on what you might require. Please get in touch for further information.
